Masterpieces from Eastern Europe

  • Date: Nov. 12, 2017
  • Time: 11:00 am - 1:30 pm

Explore the rich musical heritage and distinctive character of Eastern European cultures that fought hard to establish their unique voices against the Western European mainstream of the late 1800s. Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski develops vibrant orchestral settings of native folk songs in Mala (“Little”) Suite, while George Enescu creates a tour-de-force of Romanian/Gypsy folk styles in Romanian Rhapsody No. 1. Czech composer Antonin Dvorák infuses his cheerful Symphony No. 8 with a variety of Bohemian melodies, and Hungarian Béla Bartók demonstrates a compelling 20th-century musical language that is a synthesis of Eastern European folk styles in his Viola Concerto.
