Pictures at an Exhibition

Featuring the Carolina Master Chorale and the Coastal Carolina University Choir

Modest Mussorgsky’s famous orchestral showpiece Pictures at an Exhibition (based on paintings by his friend Viktor Hartmann) serves as the focal point for a program of music inspired by visual imagery.  Included are a brilliant portrayal of Fireworks by Igor Stravinsky, a gripping account of the crucifixion from the Virgin Mary’s perspective in Giuseppe Verdi’s Stabat Mater, a dramatic description of the peril and triumph of sea travel in Ludwig van Beethoven’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, and a poignant reflection on life and death in contemporary composer Jennifer Higdon’s Blue Cathedral.
