To open our 30th anniversary season, experience one of the most familiar and powerful vocal/orchestral masterpieces of all time. German composer and educator Carl Orff created a compelling musical setting of verses from the Carmina Burana, a collection of bawdy, irreverent Medieval-era texts discovered in a Bavarian monastery in 1803. Explore the rich musical heritage and distinctive character of Eastern European cultures that fought hard to establish their unique voices against the Western European mainstream of the late 1800s. Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski develops vibrant orchestral settings of native folk songs in Mala (“Little”) Suite, while George Enescu creates a tour-de-force of Romanian/Gypsy folk styles in Romanian Rhapsody No. 1. The three titans of classical music – Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms – form the backbone of the great German musical tradition and indeed the basis for art music throughout the world. Revel in the Baroque fanfare and invention of the Overture to Johann Sebastian Bach’s Orchestral Suite No. 3, the energy and programmatic beauty of Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 (“Pastorale”), and the sublime melodic richness of Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto.
